A number of events are taking place across County Clare this week as part of National Recreation Week 2010, which runs until November 4.The purpose of the Week is to promote the importance of recreation for young people.
Events will take place next week at various locations including Ennis, Shannon, Kilrush, Scarriff, Feakle, Lisdoonvarna, Killaloe and Ennistymon.
According to Catherine O'Hara, Community and Enterprise, Clare County Council: “This week provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase and highlight some innovative recreational projects and initiatives that have and are being developed throughout the County. While the focus is primarily on young people, a significant outcome from these initiatives and projects is that the opportunities and positivity derived in relation to young people is also applicable to all members of the wider community.”
Commenting on the range of events taking place throughout Clare, Ms. O’Hara said: “A comprehensive calendar of events has been compiled which incorporates the Arts, Sports/ Physical Activity and Active Recreation, Heritage and Entertainment. The sustainability of these projects and initiatives is crucial and heavily dependant on strong support within the local community. Clare Sports Partnership, the County Library, Clare Youth Services and the Health Promotion Unit of the HSE play an enormous part in ensuring the success of these projects.”
“Why not take the opportunity during this week to try something new… go for a swim, try skateboarding, discover a new author, rediscover the mystery of Halloween, check out the orienteering maps in Lees Road, bring a friend, make new friends and feel so much better”, she concluded.
The County Clare Recreation & Sports Strategy 2009- 2011, which was launched in January 2009, places a strong emphasis on the importance of recreation as part of a balanced and healthy lifestyle. The strategy has been the springboard for the development of a significant number of the initiatives in the County.
