Clare County Council has announced details of a parking incentive scheme aimed at promoting Christmas and New Year shopping in Ennis.
Free parking will be applicable to the town’s 759 off-street and 783 on-street public car parking spaces up to 12pm daily from Saturday, 29th November 2014, to 4th January, 2015 inclusive. There will also be free all-day parking at Cloughleigh car park.
The Council has also confirmed that the Mayor of Ennis will officially switch-on the Christmas lights in the town at 5.00pm on Friday, 28th November at the Market Roundabout.
Ahead of the busiest shopping period of the year, Councillor Johnny Flynn has called on the people of Clare to support local businesses this Christmas.
He explained: "Clare County Council, supported by the business community, is once again urging people throughout Clare to help sustain employment within the County by doing as much of their Christmas shopping as possible locally. Ennis provides a wonderful shopping experience with a wide variety of established and new businesses located throughout the town."
The Mayor complimented the partnership approach adopted by Clare County Council and the local business community to making Ennis an "attractive shopping destination" in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
"By supporting street entertainment like Ennis Street Radio, in tandem with the introduction of free car parking, pedestrianisation and an impressive Christmas lighting display, the Council is playing its part in creating a festive atmosphere and enhancing the overall shopping experience throughout the town," he added.
Paddy Darmody, President of Ennis Chamber of Commerce welcomed the initiative, adding: "The Chamber is supportive of any initiative that enhances the Town's offer and attracts shoppers to the town centre. We will be seeking an early review of the Christmas initiatives so that a plan can be put in place for the future to make Christmas in Ennis a memorable experience for all."
