Property owners will face liabilities of up to €7,230 per property if they do not regularise their NPPR liability within the next 8 weeks.
That's the warning being issued by Clare County Council which has renewed its public information campaign to remind owners of second properties, holiday homes and rental properties that they should make arrangements to regularise their NPPR liability before the by 1st September deadline.
Introduced as part of the Government's Local Government (Charges) Act 2009, the annual NPPR charge of €200 per property applies to each year during the period from 2009 to 2013. In order to maximise compliance and encourage payment of outstanding NPPR charge arrears, section 74 of the Local Government Reform Act 2014 provides for a period, from 2nd March 2014 to 31st August 2014, during which time no new late payment penalties will be applied to existing NPPR liabilities.
A Council spokesperson said: "Non-compliant owners should take advantage of this period to regularise their situation. While the NPPR is a self declaration charge the Council is anxious that property owners avoid any further unnecessary penalties being applied."
"These punitive penalties will be automatically applied from 1st September, 2014 and the Council is urging anyone in doubt regarding their obligations to contact with their County or City Council immediately," the spokesperson added.
