The importance of play and recreation for young people will be highlighted during a series of events being held throughout County Clare on Sunday July 6th next.
2014 National Play Day is a national campaign, now in its 9th year, where thousands of children and young people across Ireland get out and play at locally organised events.
Local events taking place this year include Feile Brian Ború in Killaloe, activities at Active Ennis Facilities, raft making at the Buzzstop Youth Café in Newmarket on Fergus, fun day at Lissycasey GAA Club, fun activity day at Shannon Family Resource Centre, free child swim at Shannon Swim & Leisure Centre, fun activity day with the Fusion Youth Group, and a Basketball Tournament hosted by the Old Forge Residents Association in Tulla.
Mayor of Clare Cllr. John Crowe is encouraging parents and children to use National Play Day as an opportunity to play together.
"This annual initiative serves to increase awareness in the importance of play for young people and to highlight the variety of recreation facilities and opportunities that exist locally throughout County Clare. Catering for children of all ages, this year's line-up of events demonstrates how local groups can easily deliver a play environment for children at street, neighbourhood and community level with a small amount of effort or expense," he said.
The Mayor continued: "I want to acknowledge the event organisers for their involvement in National Play Day. The role played by local sports and community groups in enhancing play and recreation opportunities throughout Clare is immensely important to the wellbeing of our young people."
National Play Day 2014 follows less than a month after National Recreation Week 2014, which saw hundreds of people across Clare participate in more than 20 events.
Funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and supported locally by Clare County Council, the annual initiative gives young people an opportunity to participate in new activities that they have not done before. 24 events, which received grants allocations ranging from €85 to €125, were held. Activities included basketball, yard painting, hip-hop dancing, arts & crafts, volleyball, water sports and circuit activities.
