An annual initiative that will see members of the local community in Ennis participating in clean-up events in their communities takes place this Saturday, 5th April 2014 between 10.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m.
Model and National Spring Clean ambassador Sarah McGovern, was today joined by Mayor of Ennis Mary Coote Ryan for the launch of the 'Ennis Clean-Up Day', which is being held as part An Taisce’s National Spring Clean.
Ennis Town Council, in conjunction with the Ennis Tidy Towns Committee and other local voluntary organisations, is organising the event during which volunteers will be involved in the clean-up of approach roads to the town, along with green areas, footpaths, roads and streets in both residential areas and housing estates.
Mayor Coote Ryan called on members of the community to lend their support to this Saturday's event.
She said: "The National Spring Clean campaign is now in its 15th year and it is a testament to the community spirit all over Ireland that the participation rates have continued to grow year on year. The Clean-Up Day being organised in Ennis will bring members of the community together to improve their local environment. I'm encouraging people to take part in the event, no matter how big or small their contribution might be.”
Ennis Town Council Environmental Warden, Gerry Murphy explained that the event has been well supported in the past and that it helps to foster links between community groups.
"Ennis is a vibrant tourism town and the Town Council is very appreciative of the efforts of local volunteers to enhance the appearance of local communities through their participating in this annual event and their work throughout the year. Being part of this National Spring Clean event has also helped Ennis to strengthen its Tidy Towns application," he added.
Meanwhile, local groups wishing to participate in National Spring Clean are required to register their event and receive a free clean-up kit from An Taisce at www.nationalspringclean.org, by phone on 01-4002219 or by completing a registration form. Forms are available from Mairead Griffin, Environment Section, Clare County Council, New Road, Ennis on 065-6846386.
The National Spring Clean is Ireland’s largest anti-litter initiative organised by An Taisce and funded by the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government. The campaign runs throughout the month of April every year with clean-up events taking place in towns and communities all over the country. Over 500,000 volunteers participated in clean-ups throughout the country last April. Further information is available from www.nationalspringclean.org.
