To coincide with the UPENDING exhibition, Fire Station Artists’ Studios in partnership with Limerick City Gallery of Art will host an international symposium on Tuesday 12 November from 11am to 4.15pm.
The symposium involves national and international speakers who will reflect on the theme of 'Art and Responsibility', as well as some of the enquiries emerging from the UPENDING exhibition, including the impact of the post-colonial on cultural identity.
Speakers for the upcoming symposium include Galit Eilat, founding director of The Israeli Centre for Digital Art in Holon and currently research curator in Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven and co-curator of the 31st Sao Paulo Biennial. Ms. Eilat will present on the theme of art and responsibility in times of social and political upheaval.
Tone Olaf Nielsen and Frederikke Hansen, founders of the Danish curatorial collective Kuratorisk Aktion, will present on their activist curatorial practice as well as their reflections on conceptualising and leading the Troubling Ireland think tank for artists 2010-11.
There will also be contributions from Liz Burns (Fire Station Artists’ Studios), Helen Carey (Director/Curator of LCGA) and a panel discussion with the artists presented in the exhibition: Kennedy Browne, Anthony Haughey, Anna Macleod, Augustine O’Donoghue, Susan Thomson and Bryonie Reid.
