The Mayors of Ennis and Clare today officially opened a new Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge over the Ennis to Athenry Railway Line at the Quin Road in Ennis.
The 400,000 euro project is situated adjacent to the existing masonry arch bridge on the Quin Road, and is located immediately to the north of Ennis Railway Station. It incorporates ramped approaches from both ends and connection to the existing public footpaths, while public lighting facilities has also been provided along the entire length of the new structure. The new facility is approximate 180m in length.
L & M Keating Ltd., Building & Civil Engineering Contractors from Kilmihil, Co. Clare were the contractors for the project.
The completion of construction work and opening of the new bridge has been welcomed by Mayor of Ennis Cllr., Mary Coote Ryan. She added: “The requirement for a pedestrian and cycle bridge over railway line on the Quin Road has existed for a number of years and am delighted that such a facility has finally been provided. I want to commend Clare Local Authorities and the contractor on the delivery of this project, which significantly improves access for pedestrians and cyclists in a safe manner at this very busy location.”
Mayor of Clare Cllr. Joe Arkins noted that the new bridge benefits the substantially increased residential population in the area and the many retail and other business outlets which have developed in the vicinity of the Quin Road during the past 20 years.
Mayor Arkins added: “The project represents a major investment by the Council at a time when finances are constrained. It represents a further development of smarter travel initiatives throughout Ennis, which include the provision of street lighting on the link road from Clareabbey Roundabout to the Lahinch Road and the extension of our network of pedestrian walkways and cycling lanes throughout the County.”
Tom Tiernan, Senior Engineer thanked Iarnród Éireann and the Railway Safety Commission for their “support and co-operation”.
