The first Irish tour by the international, multi award-winning Arcadia Quartet gets underway in Limerick on 26th November, 2013.
The final performance in the 2013 Castleconnell Concert Series takes place in Castleconnell’s All Saints Church at 8.00pm.
The Arcadia Quartet are fast becoming one of Europe's leading string quartets with a host of international prizes under their belt. Hailing from Romania, this will be their first visit to Ireland, where they will perform compositions by Joseph Haydn, Leoš Janáček and Claude Debussy.
According to Tony Rodgers, Programme Coordinator: “This tour has been organised by Wigmore Hall in London as part of the prize awarded to Arcadia Quartet for winning the 2012 London International String Quartet Competition. Luckily the dates just happened to fit perfectly into our schedule on the last Tuesday of the month. I am delighted the All Saints’ audience in Castleconnell will be the first to hear this great young quartet in Ireland.”
In addition to the London International String Quartet Competition, the Arcadia also won the Almere International Chamber Music Competition in 2011 and the International Chamber Music Competition Hamburg in 2009. Formed in 2005 while students at the Gheorghe Dima Music Academy in Romania, the quartet has performed across the world and is rapidly establishing itself as one of the most exciting string quartets of its generation.
The Quartet - featuring Ana Török and Răsvan Dumitru (violins); Traian Boală (viola); Szolt Török (cello) - have recently recorded Janáček’s only two quartets from the 1920s. They worked closely with Janáček expert Milan Škampa on the recording. Audiences in Limerick will be hearing Quartet No. 1, known as the “Kreutzer Sonata”. Janáček was inspired by Tolstoy’s “Kreutzer Sonata” - a novella which was in turn inspired by Beethoven’s eponymous Violin Sonata No. 9.
Their programme will include one of Joseph Haydn’s finest quartets, No. 64 in D major, Op. 76 No. 5, called the Largo Quartet because of the slow movement. Audience members at the All Saints Church also will hear Claude Debussy’s Op. 10 in G minor – his only string quartet - considered a watershed in the history of chamber music, sensual and impressionistic, from la Belle Époque.
