County Clare based producer of smoked fish products The Burren Smokehouse has achieved triple success in Great Taste 2013, considered the Oscars of the global food industry.
Out of almost 10,000 products that were subjected to blind tasting by over 400 judges just 125 have been awarded 3-Stars which is the highest accolade awarded by the scheme.
The Burren Smokehouse received three 3-Stars for its Irish Organic Salmon products which were re-judged by a panel including “Masterchef” judge and restaurant critic Charles Champion, food buyers from Harrods, Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Whole Food Markets, and Michelin Star chef Russell Brown.
The awards, which were presented last night at London’s Royal Gardens Hotel, coincide with the news that The Burren Smokehouse has agreed a deal with Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and Harrods to supply the central London department stores with its award-winning products. The Lisdoonvarna family-run company already supplies its products overseas KaDeWe Berlin and Dean & DeLuca New York.
“It has been a very successful few days for us and we are delighted to have been able to represent the Irish food sector so well in what is the world’s largest and most rigorous food awards scheme,” explained Birgitta Hedin-Curtin, Owner/Manager, Burren Smokehouse Ltd.
She continued: “Apart from being given the honour to supply our Burren Smoked Irish Wild Salmon for the Irish State Dinner held during Queen Elizabeth II’s historic visit to Ireland, this is the sweetest success of our company’s 25-year history. Burren Smokehouse has been winning Great Taste Awards since 2002 but this is by far the greatest achievement. All awards give credibility to our artisan values and demonstrate the care that our team take to create all aspects of these products. We have always stayed true to quality and local sourcing of the very best raw materials that we can get hold of.”
Ms. Hedin-Curtin added the company will be hosting food tastings of its products at various department stores throughout London this week, including Harrods (Wednesday), Selfridges (Thursday/Friday) and Fortnum & Mason (Friday/Saturday). The company is also exhibiting at the Speciality & Fine Food Fair 2013 being held at London’s Olympia today.
The Burren Smokehouse was set up in 1989 by Birgitta and Peter Curtin. The company sources quality raw materials for its Burren Smoked Salmon, Trout, Mackerel, and Cheese products. The Burren Smokehouse controls its own quality standards with backup of regular testing from independent laboratories and regular checks from organisations who certify the company. The Smokehouse currently employs a staff of 12, and ships within Ireland and to countries all over the world.
