Fine Gael Clare Senator Tony Mulcahy has expressed his optimism that construction work on new, permanent classroom facilities at Ballynacally National School could begin by early next year.
The school is among 46 nationwide included in the Government's Prefab Replacement Scheme (Phase 2).
Senator Mulcahy commented: “I welcome any Government scheme that seeks to reduce the use of prefabs in our schools. In previous years, there has been an over reliance on this expensive, quick-fix solution, without any regard for the long term development of our school infrastructure. In keeping with the Government’s commitment to phase out the inefficient renting of school prefabs, it is allocating €15m to replace prefabs and provide permanent resource rooms and classrooms for some 2,650 students.”
He added: “Outside of the obvious benefits that the provision of permanent classrooms will provide for the school’s staff, students and parents, it should also be pointed out that the construction of the proposed permanent accommodation generates revenue for the local economy and provides employment.”
“I want to congratulate Ballynacally N.S.'s Board of Management on today's announcement and in particular, I wish to acknowledge the school's Parents Association which has been very proactive in highlighting matters of importance to the school and those who attend it,” concluded Senator Mulcahy.
