German media see the light at Loop Head

A group of German journalists this week visited Loop Head Lighthouse in County Clare in a trip organised by Failte Ireland and Tourism Ireland.

Representing some of Germany’s best known media outlets such as Der Spiegel, the journalists were taken on a tour of the 19th century lighthouse.

Other print and online publications represented in the German delegation included Mitteldeutsche Zeitung, Berliner Kurier, Stuttgart Online Magazine, N-News.de, Fränkische Nachrichten, Münsterländische Tageszeitung and Oldenburgische.

Loop Head Lighthouse opened to visitors at weekends earlier this month and will be open 7 days a week from the June Bank Holiday Weekend for a 10-week period. Clare County Council and the Commissioners of Irish Lights also will open the Lighthouse to visitors during the 10-day National Famine Commemoration programme of events in Kilrush from May 3-12.

Loop Head Lighthouse, located at the mouth of the Shannon Estuary, is steeped in history and rich in maritime heritage with its origins dating back to the 1670s. The existing tower style lighthouse was constructed in 1854 and was operated and maintained by a keeper who lived within the lighthouse compound. In January 1991, the lighthouse was converted to automatic operation, and today is in the care of an attendant and is also monitored by the CIL.
