Publican and former Clare County Councillor John Minogue, who passed away on Monday, has been described as a "pillar of the local community" in his native Tulla by the Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Councillor John Crowe.
Councillor Crowe said: "John represented the Killaloe Electoral Area from 1960 to 1991. He was always honest and hard working for the people he represented. His Non-Party standing meant he often took a stand on issues he felt needed to be addressed and should be challenged. He was re-elected on five occasions and topped the poll in 1979 and 1985 such was his good standing in the community."
"John ran Minogue's Pub for well over half a century. Minogue's was well known to GAA fans, particularly during the 1970s when Tulla hosted many National League games. John was a dedicated follower of Clare hurling and rarely missed a Clare game."
"John also helped to establish the pub as a centre of traditional Irish music with many household names frequenting the place down through the years, including Christy Moore who played some of his first gigs in the back room while working as a clerk in Tulla's National Bank. It was here that John is said to have introduced Christy to Spancilhill, which would later become one of his best known songs."
“I wish to extend my sympathies to John's family and friends, as well as his wide network of friends throughout Ireland and further afield,” the Cathaoirleach concluded.
Mr. Minogue (85) passed away on Monday morning at Cahercalla Hospital in Ennis.
