The local community in Corofin has turned to upcycling to prepare for a very special Halloween event taking place in the village this coming Bank Holiday Monday.
A Rainbow Upcycling Workshop was held last weekend during which participants in Monday's 'Witches Walk' produced Halloween costumes out of used clothing. Those taking part in the Walk at 7pm will wear the upcycled costumes.
Event organiser, Fiona Guiheen said: "All the shops and houses along the route have been invited to decorate their windows with lit pumpkins. We'll be starting off from the GAA Hall and continuing up through the village as far an An Cupán Tae Restaurant where we will enjoy refreshments, storytelling, games and an Upcycling Fashion Show, which is being coordinated by Failte go Corofin and Corofin Youth Club. There will also be a Jack O'Lantern Competition where people are invited to bring along their carved turnips (the original Jack O lantern) or a pumpkin."
Ms. Guiheen noted that students of Corofin N.S. will be taking part in a "walk a spooky mile with a smile" event tomorrow (Thursday).
"The whole school, including the teachers, will be dressing up and children who made their costumes at the upcycling event will get a chance to wear them. We would like to thank Cumann Siúladoíri Cora-finne for agreeing to supervise the walk," she concluded.
Joan Tarmey, Clare Environmental Awareness Officer commented: "I wish to commend the local community in Corofin for choosing to upcycle clothes to make Halloween costumes this year. It is an innovative way of giving old clothes a makeover rather than sending them for recycling. Prevention and reuse are very important, and the 'Witches Walk' has provided the people of Corofin with a practical and creative outlet for this.”
