Limerick City and County Council is reminding owners of second properties, holiday homes and rental properties that they have just under a month to discharge their NPPR (Non Principal Private Residence) liability before additional penalties of over 50% are added to the charge.
Introduced as part of the Government's Local Government (Charges) Act 2009, the annual NPPR charge of €200 per property applies to each year during the period from 2009 to 2013. In order to maximise compliance and encourage payment of outstanding NPPR charge arrears, the Government provided for a period from 2nd March to 31st August during which time no new late payment penalties will be applied to existing NPPR liabilities.
While the NPPR is a self declaration charge the Council says it is anxious that property owners avoid any further unnecessary penalties being applied
A Council spokesperson stated: "The NPPR charge applied to all residential property that a person owned on the liability date, except for their principal residence. The onus is on the homeowner to volunteer and pay the charge.Non-compliant owners should take advantage of the next four weeks to regularise their situation."
"If payment is not made in full by 31 August 2014 or if settlement terms are not agreed by that date, an additional 50% of the total due to 31 August 2014 together with a late payment fee per liability date will be applied on 1 September 2014," the spokesperson added.
The Council said that anyone in doubt regarding their obligations should make immediate contact with the Council as the punitive penalties will be automatically applied from 1st September, 2014.
Persons in doubt about the liability of their property should contact Limerick City and Council at 061 496479 or nppr@limerick.ie. People requesting additional information should visit the website www.nppr.ie where the charge can be paid or registration forms downloaded.
