Ennis schools clean up at Council awards ceremony

St Anne’s School in Corrovorin has won the 2014 Ennis Best Kept Schools Competition.

Mayor of Ennis, Cllr. Johnny Flynn joined teachers and pupils from five local primary schools at an awards ceremony in Waterpark House, Drumbiggle today.

Clare County Council hosted the competition which is aimed at recognising the contribution made by Ennis schools to the environment and the work undertaken to enhance the appearance of their buildings.

Schools were judged under of a number of headings such as the appearance of school buildings and yard, wildlife and environmental projects, recycling activities, litter control and awareness projects, and overall development approach including involvement in the Green Schools Programme.

St. Anne's School was named overall winner ahead of St Clare’s School (2nd), Holy Family Senior School (3rd), Bunscoil na mBráithre (4th) and Ennis Educate Together (5th).

Addressing those in attendance, Mayor Flynn congratulated the participating schools for "making a valuable contribution to their local environment and overall visual appearance of the town."

He said the awards scheme has played an important role in creating awareness of everyone's responsibilities in relation to litter management and environmental awareness.

The Mayor continued: "I am delighted see the young people of the town demonstrating their steadfast commitment to enhancing the environment and adhering to good environmental practice at their school.  I hope the students can put some of what they have learned to good use at home during the school holidays."

"With TidyTowns judging underway across County Clare, it is important that everybody plays their part in making sure their local village or town is kept litter free and looking well. This competition complements ongoing efforts by hundreds of volunteers across Ennis to help ensure the town retains its TidyTowns Gold Medal and status as Ireland's Tidiest Large Urban Centre," concluded Mayor Flynn.

The Ennis Best Kept Schools Competition was initiated by Ennis Town Council, but has been managed by Clare County Council since the abolition of Town Councils under Local Government reforms last month.
