Significant penalties to be charged on unpaid NPPR liability

Owners of Non Principal Private Residences (NPPR) in County Clare have just 4 months until 31st August 2014 to discharge their NPPR liability before additional penalties are added to the charge under legislative changes introduced.

The NPPR charge applies to any residential property in which the owner does not reside as their normal place of residence such as holiday homes, second properties and rental properties.  The charge also applies to vacant residential property and properties where the owners live abroad.

From September 1st additional penalties of over 50% are being added to existing arrears resulting in a liability of up to €7,230 per property becoming due of which €6,230 will be made up of late payment penalties.

A Clare County Council spokesperson urged that anyone in doubt regarding their obligations should make immediate contact with their County or City Council as these punitive penalties will be automatically applied from 1st September, 2014.

"While the NPPR is a self declaration charge, the Council is anxious that property owners avoid any further unnecessary penalties being applied," the spokesperson added.

Further information also is available from the website www.nppr.ie where the charge can be paid or registration forms downloaded.
