Funding for 6 social housing units in Shannon

Clare County Council says it has received confirmation from Jan O'Sullivan, TD Minister for Housing and Planning of her decision to allocate €1.25m for the development of 6 social houses at Glaise na Rinne in Shannon.

The allocation forms part of a two-year €68m local authority home building initiative announced by the Minister today.

The news has been welcomed by the Mayor of Clare Cllr. Joe Arkins and Mayor of Shannon Cllr. Greg Duff.

According to Mayor Arkins: “Following the demise of the Celtic Tiger the building of social housing came to a standstill with a reliance on private rented and private leasing accommodation which more often than not wasn’t located in areas designed for social housing. I look forward to further announcements of this nature being made in the near future.”

Mayor Duff said: “This is an important announcement not only because the investment represents the first return to new mainstream local authority house building since the financial crisis began, but it also addresses the clear need and demand for additional  social housing units in Shannon and its environs.”

Chair of Clare County Council’s Housing SPC, Cllr Patricia McCarthy also welcomed the news, adding: “The design, accessibility and usability of previous social housing developments in County Clare have been of the highest standard and I am sure this scheme will be welcomed by applicants on the Council’s waiting list for social housing.”

Bernadette Kinsella, Shannon Town Manager and Director of Services, Clare County Council commented: “This allocation is based on the Council’s submission to the Department of Environment, Community and Local Government on the housing need in the Shannon area.   This announcement of 6 social houses represents the first phase of a two-part scheme of 12 houses. The Council is now proceeding to the design and consultation phase.”

Glaise na Rinne is a Clare County Council scheme presently comprising 16 affordable townhouses. It is located on the Gort Road area of Shannon Town.
