Forest Road Scheme application deadline nears

Clare Senator Tony Mulcahy has called on all forestry owners in Clare wishing to improve access to their lands to apply for grant aid funding from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine.

A deadline date of Monday, 31 March 2014 applies to the submission of applications under the Forest Road Scheme.

Senator Mulcahy commented: "Under this scheme, grants cover up top 80% of the cost of construction of forest roads and with increasing numbers of County Clare’s private forest estates reaching maturity, there is a real need to encourage the construction of roads now.”

He continued: "The objectives of this important scheme are to, first and foremost, provide funding for the construction of harvesting roads, as well as to improve the environmental and biodiversity value of the forests, improve the economic value of the forests, provide access for emergency vehicles, and to provide drying and chipping areas.

“Forestry owners need to be able to access the timber at harvesting time safely and efficiently and that is why I believe it is so important that the Government, under the Forestry Programme 2014-2020, invests in these roads around County Clare," Senator Mulcahy concluded.

Information on the current Forest Roads Scheme is available on the Department’s website - www.agriculture.gov.ie/forestservice/grantandpremiumschemes.
