Child car seat safety roadshows to be held in Shannon and Ennis

The Road Safety Authority (RSA), supported by Clare County Council, will host a  number of a roadshows in Ennis and Shannon during the coming weeks for Clare parents and guardians who may be unsure as to whether their child’s car seat is fitted correctly or indeed if they are using the correct one.

The ‘Check It Fits’ roadshows take place as research from the RSA highlight that as many as 4 out of 5 child car seats in County Clare may not be correctly fitted.

The free events will be held at Dunnes Stores, Clonroad, Ennis (10am – 5.30pm, 26th February), Lidl, Gort Road, Ennis (10am – 5.30pm, 27th February), and Lidl, Boyle Road, Shannon (10am – 5.30pm, 4th March).

Clare Road Safety Officer, Barry Keating said the aim of the upcoming roadshows is to help parents and guardians to learn how to fit their child’s car seat so that they can be reassured that their child is travelling safely.

He explained: “Sadly, research conducted at previous roadshows has revealed that 3 out of 4 parents are not fitting their child’s car seat which could lead to serious or fatal injury in the event of a crash. We understand that many parents, particularly new parents, are unsure as to what car seat is right for their child and they often don’t get information from retailers as to how to fit it correctly.”

Mr. Keating said that the upcoming public information events will feature a drive-through marquee enabling people to turn up in their car with their child car seat.

He added: “The checks only take a few minutes and an expert will personally check every child car seat to ensure it is fitted correctly, or if not, demonstrate how to fit it correctly or provide advice on whether a different car seat is required. Over the past seven years, thousands of child car seats have been checked by the RSA’s experts, giving thousands of parents the peace of mind that their child is travelling safely in the car.”

“This free service could save a life, so I would urge Clare parents, guardians and grandparents to please take the time to visit the roadshows in Ennis and Shannon if possible,” Mr. Keating concluded.
