Cliffs of Moher website nominated for Golden Spider

The Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience website has been shortlisted for an eircom Golden Spider Award.

Considered the Oscars of the Internet industry, the Golden Spiders honour Irish individuals and organisations for their outstanding achievements online and celebrate the successes of the Internet and digital media in Ireland.

The nomination in the ‘Best Travel, Tourism and Hospitality’ category is a major achievement for the County Clare tourist attraction which only relaunched www.cliffsofmoher.ie in July 2013 following a major redesign.

Designed by Dublin-based Sweet! Design Studio, the website has been shortlisted in the category alongside Shannon Airport’s website and 5 other projects including the Discover Ireland App, Castle Leslie, Temple Bar Hotel, Celtic Link, My Golf Society and City Hook. The judging panel comprises representatives of IBM, Intel, CoderDojo and the Irish Internet Association.

“It is very satisfying to be shortlisted for an award considering the hundreds of tourism businesses, projects and organisations that entered this year’s competition,” Geraldine Enright, Sales & Marketing Manager with the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience.

Ms. Enright added: www.cliffsofmoher.ie focuses on bringing the Cliffs of Moher to the visitor and we are delighted that the Golden Spiders adjudication panel has recognised this innovative design approach. The public’s reaction to our newly designed website has been hugely positive especially in relation to our interactive guide to the visitor attraction featuring 360 degree panoramic views of the Cliffs and Visitor Centre. Visitors planning their trip have use of an interactive map with suggested walking routes and can even book their tickets online at a discounted price. The website is also fully integrated with Smartphones and Social Media.

Meanwhile, the world-famous visitor attraction's 'Why I Love The Cliffs of Moher' contest has attracted significant traffic to the website in recent weeks. Tying the knot at the iconic O'Brien's Tower, witnessing a massive cliff rock fall in 2009, and spotting a whale in the ocean below the Cliffs are amongst some of the public submissions received as part of the promotion.  Entries and the voting have closed and a judging panel will review the 10 shortlisted entries that received the highest number of public votes. A winner will be announced by 30th November.

According to Ms. Enright: “The purpose of the contest was to drive engagement with the new website and with social media. We received 263 approved entries and over 25,000 votes from all over the world.  The winner will win a fabulous trip to County Clare including flights, carhire, accommodation, activities and admission to attractions during 2014.”

According to Eircom, the Golden Spiders 2013 award for ‘Travel, Tourism and Hospitality Industry’, will be for a website that “displays innovation and ingenuity in the area of online travel. The site should provide visitors with valuable content, time-saving interactive online booking facilities and a wide range of travel, dining and other tourist related options to the undecided visitor. A demonstration of how nominees have leveraged internet channels and technology to show a return on investment will also be taken into account.”

The 18th annual Eircom Golden Spiders Awards ceremony takes place on Thursday 28th November in The Convention Centre Dublin.
