The Cathaoirleach of Limerick County Council, Cllr. John Sheahan (FG) has described the former Fianna Fáil Minister Michael J Noonan as "an accomplished and respected politician who continued to give a great service to his local community long after his retirement from public life".
Mr. Noonan, a native of Bruff in County Limerick, died at Milford Hospice on Tuesday (17 September) after a lengthy illness.
Cllr. Sheahan said: "I always found Michael to be approachable and down to earth. His interest in politics stayed with him long after his retirement from public life and I found his opinions on current affairs to be as sharp and astute as they were during his 30-year political career. Michael's 20 years of service on Limerick County Council and 28 years as a TD and serving Government Minister is testament to his commitment to the people of Limerick West whom he served. His active involvement with various Limerick organisations such as the Limerick County Development Board and Ballyhoura Development after his retirement reflected his commitment to the local community.”
“Michael will be remembered for his ability to reach across the political divide to members of all parties, and, most of all, his love for his native Limerick. Throughout his career Michael was particularly in tune with the needs and concerns of rural Ireland having worked as a farmer in his native Bruff. I feel the time he served as an Elected Member of Limerick County Council (1967-87) while serving as a Government TD and later Minister (1969-97) helped him to stay informed of key local issues and to bring them to a national platform.
“I wish to extend my condolences to Michael's wife, Helen as well his four daughters and two sons. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam,” concluded the Cathaoirleach.
