Most comprehensive ever programme for Heritage Week in Clare

County Clare, IRELAND - Details have been announced of the most comprehensive ever programme of events for County Clare during National Heritage Week 2013 from August 17-25th.
More than 80 separate events focusing on County Clare’s built, natural & cultural heritage will take place during the week which is co-ordinated by Clare Local Authorities and The Heritage Council with support from the Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht and Fáilte Ireland. Heritage Week is part of European Heritage Days, a joint initiative of the Council of Europe and the European Union.

Some of the highlights of Heritage Week include a talk detailing new information gathered from an excavation of Poulnabrone Portal Tomb, a presentation on archaeological discoveries during the ongoing River Fergus Flood Relief Scheme Project, a presentation of a Green Infrastructure Plan & Design Guide for Shannon, a celebration in Killaloe/Ballina focusing on the lives of Brian Boru and St Flannan, a harvest celebration in Miltown Malbay, and a talk exploring the impact of information technology on heritage promotion.

Mayor of Clare, Cllr. Joe Arkins said Heritage Week focuses on getting people involved in the heritage of the Clare and “particularly the heritage of the local community, making it accessible to everyone”.

“I would urge people to support the events happening in their community and learn a little about their heritage and history. Whether you are a resident or a visitor to Clare there are many and varied heritage events to choose from, including night-time bat walks, historical lectures, traditional music sessions, storytelling, and community walks and talks. Many events organised are free of charge and National Heritage sites also offer concession rates during the week itself,” added Mayor Arkins.

Speaking ahead of Heritage Week 2013, Clare Heritage Officer Congella McGuire stated: “We were delighted by the response we received following our appeal in May to the people of County Clare to get involved in National Heritage Week 2013 by organising an event in their community to showcase their local natural and cultural heritage. Clare County Council, The Heritage Council and Clare Heritage Forum wish to thank all the individuals and community groups who are taking part and facilitating events during the coming week.”
