Monthly Limerick Performance in Sport Award winners announced

Limerick Lakers U17 Basketball Team

A rising star of Irish Mountain Biking and the Limerick Lakers U17 Boys Basketball Team have been named as the winners of the Performance in Sport Award for June and July.

14-year-old Leah Maunsell from Team Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Club, who last week represented Ireland in the European Youth MTB Championships 2013 in Austria, is regarded as one of the country’s best up-and-coming cyclists having notched up numerous top 2 finishes in races throughout the country this year. The June Award winner won the U14 National Championships this summer and has been added to the Cycling Ireland Youth Programme in preparation for the 2020 Olympics.

Meanwhile, the Limerick Lakers U17 Boys Basketball Team have been named winner of the July Award following their runners-up finish at the 11th International Basketball Tournament in Poland in July. The team also won the North Munster League and got to the Final of the Cork Cup and the Cork League.

Sponsored by Limerick-based first aid and medical device specialists Fleming Medical in conjunction with Limerick Sports Partnerships, the Performance in Sport Award was launched earlier this year to recognise the valuable contribution made by sporting clubs and organisations to community life throughout Limerick. Previous winners of the Award include Limerick City Gymnastics Club (May), Richmond RFC (April) Catholic Institute Athletic Club Men’s seconds hockey team (March) and Scoil Pól Secondary school student Ed Valetka from Kilfinane (February).

CLLSP Coordinator, Phelim Macken said: “We are delighted to have been able to present Leah and the Lakers team with a First Aid Kit and a €500 AED Defibrillator voucher each. Leah certainly is a star in the making as evidenced by her inclusion on the Irish Mountain Biking Team for last week’s European Championships in Graz. I saw her compete against boys and adults when she was 12 and it was clear to me then that she had a very bright future ahead of her. In the same way that Leah has helped to raise the profile of Mountain Biking in Limerick, the successes of the Limerick Lakers side during 2013 will undoubtedly inspire others to consider playing basketball, which is a growing sport in Ireland.”

Open to all 700 clubs in Limerick City and County, the winners of the monthly award are decided by a committee made up of LSP staff and Fleming Medical staff. At the end of the year the monthly winners will be invited to the County Limerick Local Sports Partnership (CLLSP) annual awards ceremony where the sporting performance of the year will win an AED (provided by Fleming Medical) worth €2400, an AED training evening for 8 people worth €600 and a perpetual trophy.
