The most successful period in the history of Limerick City Gymnastics Club was officially recognised today when the club was named winner of the Performance in Sport Award for May.
An unprecedented 24 local gymnasts, higher than the national average for any Irish club, qualified for the National Championships held last month. 2013 has also been the Caherdavin-based club’s most successful year with gymnasts competing at all levels from 1-10 in Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.
Sponsored by Limerick-based first aid and medical device specialists Fleming Medical in conjunction with Limerick Sports Partnerships, the Performance in Sport Award recognises the valuable contribution made by sporting clubs and organisations to community life throughout Limerick. Previous winners of the Award include Richmond RFC (April), Catholic Institute Athletic Club Men’s seconds hockey team (March) and athlete Ed Valetka from Kilfinane (February).
Limerick City Gymnastics Club coach Louise Masterson, coach today accepted a First Aid Kit and a €500 AED Defibrillator voucher on behalf of the club.
CLLSP Coordinator, Phelim Macken said Limerick City Gymnastics Club’s recent successes reflected the many years of hard work undertaken at underage level.
Mr. Macken added: “The club’s development plan is now reaping dividends with a record number of local gymnasts competing at the highest level in Ireland. As part of this plan, gymnasts aged 13-18 years can also assist qualified coaches on the “Young Coaches Programme” on a weekly basis. 5 coaches have so far been certified as part of this.”
Open to all 700 clubs in Limerick City and County, the winners of the monthly award are decided by a committee made up of LSP staff and Fleming Medical staff. At the end of the year the monthly winners will be invited to the County Limerick Local Sports Partnership (CLLSP) annual awards ceremony where the sporting performance of the year will win an AED (provided by Fleming Medical) worth €2400, an AED training evening for 8 people worth €600 and a perpetual trophy.
