Mayor of Clare Councillor Pat Daly today congratulated the community of Loop Head on the Peninsula’s successful inclusion in the final 5 shortlist for The Irish Times Best Place to Holiday in Ireland competition.
For the competition – which has been running since March – members of the public were invited to nominate the places they love to holiday. The shortlist features three remote areas of natural beauty – the Glen of Aherlow, Co Tipperary; Inishbofin island, Co Galway; and Loop Head peninsula – alongside Derry city and Killarney, Co Kerry.
Mayor Daly said: “The fact that Loop Head has made the shortlist from an entry list of more than 1,400 destinations throughout Ireland is testament to the quality of the tourism product on offer. A huge amount of work is being carried out by local community groups, supported by Clare Local Authorities, to promote the Peninsula as a visitor destination to both domestic and international tourists.”
Mayor Daly said he believed Loop Head’s rich heritage and natural beauty has played a key part in the Peninsula’s inclusion in the shortlist.
He continued: “Loop Head is one of Ireland’s most scenic locations and possesses an abundance of natural vistas, unique geological and archaeological sites, recreational amenities, and a wide range of festivals and events throughout the year. The success of the Loop Head Lighthouse visitor project is just one example of how the local community has benefited from tourism-related business in recent years. Other examples include the West Clare Railway, Kilkee Roadtrain, Dolphin Watching, various arts and crafts trails, and the development of some of Ireland’s most unique cycling and walking routes. Loop Head’s inclusion in the Irish Times shortlist will further establish the Peninsula as a popular visitor destination.”
Despite the inclement weather conditions of the past two months meanwhile, Clare County Council has announced that more than 2000 tourists passed through the doors of the historic Loop Head Lighthouse during the 8 weekends of the 2013 opening period.
The 19th century lighthouse was opened by Clare County Council and the Commissioners of Irish Light (CIL) during weekends for its third successive season in mid-March. The facility’s opening hours will be extended to weekdays from the June Bank Holiday Weekend and will remain open up to the end of September.
