Sligo Firms Craft New Tourism Venture

Twelve Sligo craft businesses have come together to create a new Sligo brand and help promote tourism in the region.

Spurred on the by the current difficult economic climate they have united under one exciting new brand to present a professional and accessible craft experience.

The result is one of Ireland’s newest and innovative group marketing initiatives involving 12 creative entrepreneurs based across County Sligo.

Made in Sligo will be launched officially by Senator David Norris, a champion of creativity and artistic talent, on Thursday 4th November at 6.30pm in Johnson’s Court Shopping Centre, Sligo. Senator Norris is a declared candidate for the role of President when Mary McAleese vacates the job next year.

The opening promises to be an enlightening and lively event, not only showcasing the collective work of talented Sligo craft designers and makers but kicking off new initiatives to bring their work to the attention of the public. It brings together quality assessed makers of home and interior accessories; ceramics, photography, sculptures, furnishings, as well as personal fashion accessories; jewelry, leather handbags, giftware and much more.

The group’s new website is up and running on www.madeinsligo.ie and its Facebook page had over 1,200 likes in its first week of operation. Made in Sligo has developed a fascinating craft trail, opening up craft studios to the public giving the opportunity to meet the maker, view the skills involved, share their stories and view collections of the latest works. It is also a welcome new tourism product for Co. Sligo – 25,000 craft trail brochures, including a 10% discount coupon, are being distributed and the craft trail is also available online www.madeinsligo.ie.

“Made is Sligo craft pods will be visible in hospitality and retail locations all over the Northwest – a unique opportunity to view and purchase from the Made in Sligo collection”

For those looking for the perfect and authentic Sligo gift, Made in Sligo have devised an ideal solution – a gift voucher which can be spent in any of the 12 Made in Sligo craft outlets on the craft trail. Vouchers will be available to purchase at select outlets in Sligo and on line on www.madeinsligo.ie.

Made in Sligo was made possible by the ongoing support of local funding agencies; Sligo LEADER Partnership who provided much needed training and marketing funding and Sligo County Enterprise Board who provided mentoring and sponsorship.

The launch on Thursday 4th November at 6.30pm is the start of a weekend expo of Made in Sligo craft work in Johnson’s Court Shopping Centre, Sligo. All are welcome, join us to meet the makers, see craft in action and support local enterprise.
